I give you... DragonBall.
Now before everyone starts complaining, "Oh, Goku doesn't sound anything like the real character!" "Roshi doesn't look or talk funny!" "Its the not the dinosaur world they live in!!"
Though Piccalo does look retarded.
I was never really a fan of DragonBall, I was all about Dragon Ball Z, but I know what a live action movie of Dragon Ball should look like....
And it is how they represent it here.
How would you like it if they actually attempted to accomplish every single thing the fanboys asked of them?
I want Goku to have big hair.
I want Bulma to have blue hair.
I want to see Krillin.
Where is Roshi's island?
Fulfilling these needs... or wants I should say, would make the actual creation of this movie not necessarily impossible, but definitely a new kind of stupid.
They are attempting something that no one has ever even thought of trying, there have been YEARS for them to think up a proper way to display these characters, and they know the fans they are working with... some of the most die hard fans out there. For a lot of people Dragon Ball was their first anime.
All I am saying is, people want this movie, yes. But not THIS movie for it lacks familiar things. Let me ask you this... Would you rather see a movie that is completely thought out and under control by the director, a movie which takes everything they have chosen to work on and create believable characters and situations... or would you rather see a midget named krillin throwing a Fucking distructo disc.... or Hair on an actual human being that stands 2 feet in the air ( not a fro).
Or a voice that would never fit a character outside of an anime?
They are making this movie as realistic, as in believable, as possible. If they want to appease the fan boys, they are more than welcome to do that if they do this well enough to create a sequel.
-Travis... with love.
p.s. I will watch this opening night. Most definitely.

Thank you Travis.
Apparently me you and a select few are the only people on the internet that actually have a brain.
I agree with you completely.
I can't wait for this movie to come out, I was always a big fan of Dragonball and am happy to see a movie that actually makes it real. ridiculouse hair is not needed, the fact Bulma has a streak of blue is fine for me.
I think the problem a lot of people have with this film is the medium. Instead of sticking to the tried and true animation style that lends itself well to all the crazy and silly shit you see in Dragon Ball, they chose to adapt it for live action which forces them them to decide to either keep it true to the source material which would look stupid or make it more realistic which also looks stupid (see trailer). I'm not against live action adaptations of animated shows or comics but not every series lends itself well to realism.
I, for one, prefer the energy disc throwing midgets and outrageous hairstyles.
Though it's understandable that making a live-action film that is completely faithful to an anime as over the top as Dragonball is practically impossible to make, it's also hard to balance between making it serious and losing that spark that made the anime get such a rabid fanbase.
To me the wacky characters were the main appeal, rather than the story which seemed to revolve around variations of "Bad guy arrives, fights, loses upper-hand, gets stronger, is beaten by good guys". So, naturally, making the characters more generic and normal has made me less enthusiastic.
Afterall, you can only change the original concept so much until it becomes something else entirely. It suppose it could be regarded by some as slapping the Dragonball name on a film, rather than a Dragonball film.
I'm not too bothered though. I was never expecting much, and it'll be interesting to see how Hollywood handles it. It might even be decent and even if it does suck, it's not as if the anime has been erased from existence.
I just wish people would wait for the film to come out before they start judging it so fanatically, but there's always people like that.
Well, as a DB/Z/GT fan, I am interested to see what they have done.
I'm fine with the realism, but the only problem I have with this movie is that they're not following the original story. At all.
They're just using the characters.
Gods from the sky? Are they saying that the Namekians are Evil?
Seven mystics created the Dragon Balls? Where's Kami?
Also, where's Pilaf, and why does Mai work for Piccolo?
They could have made a good humorous action fighting movie by sticking to the story....
A teenage Goku, who is isolated from society and trained my his martial art expert and now deceased Grandfather, meets up with DragonBall hunting Bulma, who wants to use the DBs to wish for a boyfriend. They decide to find the DBs together and meet Yamcha, Oolong (who doesn't necessarily need to be a Pig, just a shape-shifting pervert), Roshi, and everyone else along the way.
...
Anyway...my fandom is slipping out...so thats just my two cents.
I'm just glad they stopped calling this movie just DragonBall.
Well, there really is no reason for Bulma not to have blue hair. I mean realism or not, there is such a thing as hair dye. She might not have been born with it in this "realistic" DragonBall world, but should could easily have dyed it blue. It's not a big deal, but there isn't a reason for her not to have it.
I'm not sure when I'll see this but most likely before it leaves theaters. My expectations for DragonBall aren’t high so I’ll go in and enjoy it for what it is. What I do like from what I’ve seen is how they show the capsules do what they do, instead of just having a puff of smoke. Also in the trailer when Goku starts to say kamehameha is epic. It may suck or it may be good but it’s still a live action DragonBall movie and for that reason its awesome.
I'm staying indifferent to the movie. I was a DB fanatic in every sense of the word, I own evert DBZ episode on VHS, back when DVD's were like "wtf". But I'm not going to outrage against this movie, becuase it wont do anything. I'll go see it, and maybe be entertained, maybe nbe impressed, maybe laugh my ass off. But I will be seeing it.
I have to disagree with you because it's far away from the story. The characters look weird and the fact there just using it too sell the movie. Now I thought you would know but Goko and all Sayans are not human. Most the things people want are simple little things that they should do.
i'm not trying to be racist or anything, but if you feel that way then take it that way if you want
...am i the only one who finds it ridiculous that Goku is played by a white guy?
i mean the last non-asian guy with an asian name i've known is Kobe, but this? this is ridiculous
Not to be a DB nerd, but roscopi, he isnt white or asian, he's saiyan. And Goku is fairly pale in the anime.
I can answer most of these posts like this.... Why would you want to watch a movie that tells a story which you have already seen? They are taking Dragonball in a different direction obviously enough.
Oh, and the reason she can't have blue hair... because everyone looks fucking ridiculous with blue hair in the magical world i like to call REAL LIFE dun dun dun.
I have to admit your right Travis, and I'm a old fan of DBZ too. But I feel it's the best approch they can get just like how they used a training facility instead of a cloning facility for the hitman movie. It's far from the original, but yet it need to be conprehensif for the regular people.
this seems like it's going to be a great movie. they're taking away some of the outrages things thta med me love the series, but, it seems like they're doing a greating job to make it seem more realistic/appeal to more ppl. should be epic.
@ Travis:
The majority of DBZ fans are use to the retelling of the story.
Heck, we've heard the story told in video games plenty of times.
But thats because none of them have gotten it right (read: perfect).
The closest a video game has gotten to telling the 'perfect' DBZ story was Budokai 1 in 2002.
Since then we've supported the development of the games hoping that we've get the perfect one.
(It's a bad thing, we know...)
Anyway...
I can't talk for all the fans now,
but I think a lot of us wanted this to be an accurate telling of the storyline.
I guess because a lot of things have gotten good live action recreations recently.
But the fact that they're changing the story up so much, makes people not see this as live action DBZ, but something just trying to copy.
This may be a good movie...I wont know until release of course...but I don't think it will be a good DB movie.
So any one think that they wasn't even trying when they made this?
Yeah I agree Travis. There is no way they can do the two feet tall hair. Here is all the proof one needs:

Besides that, if people don't like the live action movie, they can always watch the animated dbz movies that have come out again and again. Though I will miss those voice actors but that's the way it goes.
Oh the link didn't come out here again:
