Late to the Crappy Party: Spyro the Dragon

What the fuck is this shit?

I have never been a fan of 3d platformers, but there is a reason I decided to finally try this game. I got a new 4gig stick for my PSP and I respect Insomniac's last generation Ratchet and Clank franchise. Resistance is solid. The ps1 version of Spyro the Dragon was on the PSP store for 5.99 so I decided to pick it up. After all, I heard many good things about this game back in the day. Many compared it in quality to Crash Bandicoot, which was a good series.

What the fuck is this shit???

(edit for clarity: Baby game = 3-5 year age range)

I don't mean to channel Shane B here, but this is a mother fucking baby game. While Crash had some real challenge, Spyro is aimless and full of baby. I wouldn't even call this a fucking platformer. So you run around and collect gems. You can also talk to dragon statues and they come to life and usually say something along the lines of, "Hey Spyro! Collect some more gems!"

And that's it!!! That's all you fucking do!!! WHAT THE FUCK! You run around the same shitty boring worlds just collecting gems. You might occasionally come across a portal to another land and think, "Oh the real game is in these portal worlds. This shit I'm running around in is just a hub world." NO!!! You collect enough gems to go into the world and you end up in another fucking place that looks exactly like the one you are in, and guess what???? YOU COLLECT MORE FUCKING GEMS. WHAT IS THIS SHIT?????

YOU FUCKING GRAPHICS WHORES! YOU BOUGHT THIS SHIT BECAUSE YOU THOUGHT THE GAME LOOKED GRAPHICALLY IMPRESSIVE!!! THIS GAME IS NO MARIO 64 KILLER. MARIO 64 SHITS ALL OVER THIS PIECE OF SHIT (EVEN IF THAT IS FUCKING REDUNDANT). THIS GAME IS EVEN WORSE THAN PRINCE OF PERSIA 2008. I'M SO GLAD I NEVER FUCKING LISTENED TO YOU SPYRO FUCKERS BACK IN THE DAY WHEN I WAS PLAYING XENOGEARS! YOUR FAVORITE PURPLE DRAGON IS A PIECE OF SHIT GEM COLLECTING GEM COLLECTOR. I WAS SAD WHEN INSOMNIAC GAVE UP THE FRANCHISE, BUT NOW I REALIZE THAT SPYRO IS PROBABLY IN BETTER HANDS NOW!!!

And to all fans of this shitty game. I would encourage you to:

1. Go replay this game.
2. Explain to me why you ever liked this baby game.

Several things...

1.) Fuck you Brad.
2.) When I liked this game, I was a fucking kid.
3.) This game was never designed to please 25 year old males
4.) Worse than Prince of Persia 2008? WTF is that shit about? Prince of Persia 2008 is not a bad game at all and you can kiss my ass if you think so...
5.) Have a nice day.

Love,
Nick

Oh god, this weeks podcast IS going to be gold. Prepare for the debates.

I agree with nick on this, brad.
This game was meant for kids not adults. Yes, I have the game and yes I enjoyed it when I was a kid. Do I play the first spyro (which you are referring too) now, no. Not all games are meant for adults and obviously this isn't one of them, darling.

1. You guys didn't replay the game.

2. There are games good for kids that are great. See Mario 64.

3. This game is often compared along side Crash Bandicoot. Crash is a whole different levels as it provides variety and actual challenge.

4. Baby game or not, this shit is still poorly fucking made. To assume a 10 year old can't handle more than is offered in this game is depressing.

Brad, I really don't care too much about you not liking Spyro. I could have told you that you wouldn't like it before you ever played it.

Brad said...

Guess what. I played Mario and Zelda when I was a kid. Sonic and Castlevania. Mega Man and Metroid.

As a fucking kid.

Why are we assuming kids a braindead morons who can only handle simple ass gem collecting in a completely non threatening environment??

Maybe I was some child prodigy?

Oh, and a lot of the games I played as a kid still hold up even though I'm 26.

Nick, Brad didn't like Prince of Persia '08 because it was too linear and that the boss fights had no substance(and they were just tedious at times).

Now onto Spyro. The major reasons you listed for disliking Spyro is that it actually was intended for a younger audience, but the problem is that it was, albeit probably kids 5-7 in age. This game was literally made with the intent of garnering a younger audience; the reason that most look back on it with such a passionate view of nostalgia is probably because, for so many, it was was their first game one the PS1. Or it was one of the first incarnations of a 3d platformer they played; either way I do agree that Spyro never held a candle to Crash in terms of actually gameplay.

Seeing as I'm a year younger than you, brad.

Some games were not made to be upheld. (is that even a freaking word, probably not)
Hmm... Lets take this in another direction shall we? I'm going to break this down. You don't like the game basicaly because it's boring and the only thing you seem to be doing is looking for gems and having somewhat of a meaningless convo with the dragon statues. There's no challenges. And I'll admit yes its not as fun and entertaining as crash bandicoot is. Yes, I laughed when crash got cut into two peices and his legs walked off on him.(Crash bandicoot warped)
And to be honest not all parents want their kids playing semi violent games.
Btw, refresh your memory. Mario has been around longer than spyro and crash, buddy. Mario will always be a favorite.

Nick said...

Your missing the point. Zelda and Mario are targeted towards a much wider demographic! Kids and Adults! Spyro... pretty much a kids game. If you hated it so much, perhaps you should try Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon, I hear it is basically "Spyro of War"

Snowie Owl said...

Spyro Dawn of the dragon is a challenging game if you are playing single person and not co-op. I have that game, I've played it more than twice already, I love the music and there is some humor to it as well. I'll drop a name Wayne Brady for all of you that Have seen whose line is it anyway..

crazystupid0 said...

This game was meant to be enjoyed by KIDS. That is why you as a adult don't find this game to pleasing. When I was younger playing this game it was pretty fun, but if I guarentee if I play it at the current age I'm at I would find it to be terrible in your situation.

Snowie Owl said...

but then again brad might get frustrated if he's playing single mode. I've gotten mad a few times during gameplay because I couldn't remember how to move the two dragons across the wall together without screwing myself up and starting over again. But then again brad's pretty smart, he'll probably get the moves a lot faster than me.

I actually agree with Brad. When I was younger I didn't even like this game, granted I wasn't actually a "kid" since I was 15. But I did love Zelda, Mario, Crash, etc. But Spyro was garbage from the first game onto it current incarnations. Spyro has never been good, and I really don't understand why anyone ever liked this game.

Brad, you've got an ally in me, because this game was never good in my opinion.

I just replayed some of the game from the start and I am already on the 3rd world with 100% of the gems, dragon eggs and dragons collected on each level so far. All since I made my last post on this, sad isn't it? :/

Snowie Owl said...

Some kids bought the game because they liked dragons. They like dragons and the idea to play a dragon seemed like a lot of fun to them. Heck, that's one of the reasons my folks got me the game for christmas.(It was my first ps1 game and I liked fantasy and legend stuff)I have probably played spyro three times in my life.
To me it's a kids game. Some of the recent spyro stuff is okay. Although Nick, I strongly suggest that we retract our recommendation of spyro dawn of the dragon back. Now that I think about it Brad would hate it. If he didn't like the gems thing he won't like any of the spyro games.

Epic comment fight. I hope this gets brought up in the podcast this week.

Snowie Owl said...

Nah, this ain't an epic fight, its an epic debate. XD And honestly I like these.

Wow, I seriously though this was something Travis had written.

Okay, Brad, try Spyro 2. It's a much better game and it's more challenging. There's a point to colecting the gems, the levels have a better design sceme, the bosses battles are much better, and there actually are SOME platforming elements. But, I wont fault you for hating this game. You're entitled to your opininon.

Refer to all of Nicks post's.

Personally, I hate so many of 4PP's opinions for some reason. Brad's especially now -_-.

woops.. messed up on y last post. anywho, i agree. the voice acting sucks, coloring sucks, graphics sucks... but seriously, i think spyro 2 and 3 are the best. don't judge the entire series with number 1. 2 and 3 are the best, maybe even hero's tale.

And in relation to this post, I never played Spyro. I was a Crash man myself.

Just posting to say that I am going to pop in my Spyro 1 disc into my 60GB PS3, play it, and post a response.

brad, spyro is alot different then mario, sonic, metroid, etc. it's meant for kids, like them, but, looses it's luster after u turn probably about 13,14, or 15.

Even now, I wouldn't say Spyro is a BAD game. Yes, I've played it recently (One year ago), and while it certainly wasn't the amazing game I enjoyed in my childhood, I didn't dislike it. In fact, at some parts, I downright enjoyed myself. While there IS the possibility that may have come about from pure nostalgia, I don't believe it did. Spyro is a good game for the audience it targets, and even now, I was able to play it with a mix of enjoyment and humor. Sure, I realized it was kiddy, but it's charming in it's own way, if you can accept that childlike humor is how it's MEANT to be. Like I said, it may be pure nostalgia speaking, and I'm not trying to convince anyone to like Spyro. I just feel the need to defend a game that meant so much in my childhood, and is in no way a BAD game, just targeted differently than most games I would buy today.

I just 100% the first world and it's levels (all gems and dragons), and it was enjoyable.
Not to challenging, but enjoyable (also nostalgia bum-rush).

Camera gave me trouble, but that is to be expected.

Dialog was cheesy, but it was really meant to inform the player of the controls more than anything else.

Yes it is collecting gems and waking up the dragons.
Not hard, I admit.

Finding all the gems can be tricky.
I was one short in an area, and looked everywhere to find it.
As well, there was a fly-to point I completely overlooked.

Anyway...
I've always loved the blocky graphics of this age of games (this, Crash, MGS1), but thats just me (and the nostalgia).

The music was nice. Fits each level/world nicely.

The Boss of the first world was more comedy then an opponent.
(The dogs in the level were assholes though.)

Yes, this game was meant for younger audiences, but I enjoyed myself when I was playing (again nostalgia contributed).

I think a game like this is hard to go back to when you've played the high caliber games of today.
Especially for Brad since it doesn't have any unique gameplay elements, and can be kind of linear.

This was just a first attempt at a new IP for Insomniac.
I think the later Spyro Games (Ripto's Rage, and Year of the Dragon) have better levels and gameplay elements (much like Crash 2 and 3 over 1).

Anyway this game wasn't crap in it's time, but may be seen so by players of today. It's just how the times go.

Also, caps and overuse of punctuation don't help your case Brad.

I always thought Spyro was a pile of shit. Even as a kid. I'm with you 100% on this, Brad.

Danny Smith said...

don't ever change brad.

Anonymous said...

Well I never played it so I can't judge, but I hope you got your money back.

Hey guys , Guess what, BRAD IS 100% FUCKING CORRECT ABOUT THIS GAME! I played it all the time when I was 7... FUCKING 7 YEARS OLD AND I THOUGH THIS WAS A PIECE OF SHIT! Plus, it shows Nicks taste in games when he says prince of persia 08 was good.

Cheers
