Another big franchise has decided to move its main series to the Wii. This is no huge surprise since the still unreleased Dragon Quest 9 is a DS game.I think what this actually reveals is that this franchise has always been on the console that sells the most. It was on the NES, SNES, PS1, PS2, DS, and now the Wii simply because they were the market leaders in Japan and usually the world. This convinces me that Enix has never wanted to get the most out of their series by putting it on the most powerful console, ad it seems it was probably always about money. What happened to developer pride? Well, maybe it wasn't always about money.
Oh wait. The main character in DQ8 could go Super Saiyan. Yes... always about money.
This is setting yet another dangerous precedent though. All bets are off and I think anything could end up on the Wii now. What's next for the Wii? A slightly better looking Kingdom Hearts 2? How about a slightly better looking Zone of the Enders 2? How about a slightly better looking Okami?
I'm just glad I'm not a big Dragon Quest fan. I know David wanted to see some change or evolution for this series. I just hope the inevitable waggle mini-games are enough for him.

Are you kidding me? I really can't tell if this is post some kind of subtle joke or not. I'd have thought you Brad, of all people, would be a bit less short-sighted than to say that it's somehow impossible to "get the most out of" a game by putting it on a less powerful console. The PS2 had by far the highest concentration of quality, classic games of the last generation, and that was A. the least powerful console and B. had the highest user base.
Of course you make a game for the highest-selling console. Why the hell would you not? That's the question every serious gamer who owns a Wii has been asking ever since the damn thing came out. Why would a company bother spending many times the amount in development costs for a console that has a lower install base? Plus, Enix has always explicitly stated that they make Dragon Quest games (which, by the way, are so popular in Japan that they had to make a ruling where DQ games are only allowed to come out on weekends since no fucker bothers to go to work on a DQ release day) always on the most popular console. Most popular franchise = most popular console. Why do it any other way?
Besides which, DQ has always been unashamedly old-school in its design. They could make DQ10 on a Gameboy and the basic gameplay would still be broadly similar. Would releasing it on PS3 or 360 with fancy hi-res graphics make it a better game, or somehow more authentic or lovingly crafted? You must be kidding. In what way is adding shaders and bump-mapping "getting the most out of" a game?
Besides, even though I'm not a big DQ fan, I played DQ8 and I liked it a lot. I also still think it's quite a beautiful game in its simple, colourful way, as long as you can get past the annoying Toriyama "I shit 50 characters like this every time I go to the john" character design. Okami is a better-looking, more beautiful game than Gears of War 2. That's just a fact as far as I'm concerned. Ugly-ass grey space marines in 1080p are still ugly-ass grey space marines (and before anybody accuses me of bias or fanboyism, yes I do enjoy Gears of War, it's a great game but it's ugly as a clubbed seal).
Anyway the truth about DQ10 is it'll be exactly like all the previous DQ games, and it'll sell like pigshit to a dirt farmer no matter what console it's on.
Oh, and a better-looking Zone of the Enders 2? Fuck, I'd buy that.
lol, what happened with dragon quest 9?
Read the OP, dude. It's a DS game. Coming out early next year.
Never was a Dragon Quest fan...never will be, most likely. This is probably great news to sum but I'd rather hear news of games being released next year...when this game probably won't be released till 2010 or later. :I
I'm playing the Tim Allen card on this one Quater.
I WANT MORE POWER!
HARGHOHARGHO
The Wii is not only less powerful in terms of graphics. It is a weaker console all around. Look at Dead Rising Wii. Doesn't just look like shit, but it has way less zombie on screen at a time. The Wii just can't handle it.
The one thing going for overtly old school DQ8 was it's smexy graphics and presentation. It's just sad to see two games later that it won't look much different.
The PS2 was also nowhere near the difference in power from the other consoles of its generation vs the Wii.
And for Zone of the Enders 3...
You choose. PS360 or Wii??
Waggle for slashes, or hundreds of robots on screen in a sexy ass graphics engine?
And I'm not saying that everyone who makes games for the weaker consoles cares less about their games. It's kind of me just venting. It does seem like this happens though. The first big console Monster Hunter (with online) since the originals on PS2 and they put it on the Wii? Not the 360??? The console with by far the best online service to support a game like this?>> Seriously? Monster Hunter with friend codes is what these developers have been dreaming of??? Yick. Sounds like pure cash money to me.
