Wii Motion: Plus or Minus

One thing that was announced at E3 that we may not have discussed enough is the new Nintendo Attachment, Wii Motion Plus. If you haven't already heard it's an piece that will plug into the bottom of the Wii Remote and will provide a "true" 1:1 response in motion controls. Sure, that all sounds great, but really what does that mean for us?

First off, what games are going to use this feature? We already know of the "killer app" called Wii Sports Resort. I've also heard of talk that Red Steel 2 would also take advantage of the new motion controls. But really what else is there? We've all been talking about the possibility of motion controls since the Wii was announced, besides a little waggle here and jiggle there, what have we really gotten from our investment? I could see possible a real tennis game that would be deep enough to mimic real tennis with wrist movements, but I don't think there enough people who would understand the concept to make a big enough market to warrant development. I'm sure there eventually will be a new Star Wars Lightsaber game and all those Force Junkies will go crazy, but besides combat what else is there?

Secondly, how will this impact Nintendo and game development for the Wii? We've already seen a segmentation between casual games and core games on the Wii. We've been flooded with half-assed motion games that have been spoon fed to new game players who honestly just don't know any better. Do you think these developers are just going to start making games that utilize 1:1 controls? There's not a need to. These players are already fascinated by shaking the remote to chop onions, you think they're going to care or understand about the subtleness of something like swordplay? So who then will Motion Plus be targeted at. You can't tell me that all core games are going to support Motion Plus and that will be the deciding factor between casual and core games. Unless it's a required attachment for the future, I don't see this taking off. So will there be casual games, core games, and then hardcore games that support Motion Plus? I almost think it would have been better just to release a whole new Remote. That way they could have upgraded the camera in the Wii as well.

Which brings me to the next point....How will it actually play? I think we were all expecting this when the Wii first launched, but how will it actually be now. I have doubts that 1:1 is even possible, especially wirelessly. I've bought wireless headphones before but always returned them just because it's still not the same quality as normal headphones. Now we'll have this clunky piece making our Remote longer and possibly more awkward. Also, do you remember when you were young and you and a friend got two plastic swords/lightsabers and decided to have a "duel?" Remember how that turned out, not exactly the most graceful right? We're not skilled sword fighters and we're not choreographed, so my guess is that spastic flailing will eventually win out over any attempt at civilized combat.

Lastly, what will this add on mean for future games? I'd love for this to be the standard. But I have a feeling support on this will be scarce. The Zapper came out and besides the 5 or 6 games that actually use it, what else is there? The Wii Balance Board is out and I have no idea what Nintendo is going to do with now. With the Wii my fears lie with the fact that companies have a high return on accessories. With the Wii it's been all about add on sales. Nintendo has made butt-loads on Remotes sales because there's no other alternative. They've made tons on the little plastic wheels for Mario Kart and doodads that most people honestly don't need. I'd hate to see this go in the same direction where it's just about selling the extra add on hardware.

In the end, don't be surprised if we get two or three games that are interesting or inventive that really utilize the new sensitivity. They worth a look but won't exactly go down as the greatest game of all time. I'm really getting tired of these half-baked Nintendo ideas that never even get clearance to go on the runway. I'll get stuck with a drawer full of stuff like the Donkey Kong Bongo, which I own five of by the way, and that'll be the end of it. I guess maybe the real question is why do I keep supporting this stuff if I know it's all going to end up as crap?

Somebody help me,
David

Oh Happy Days!!

Project M Announcement

So apparently we're not the only ones working on a Project M. NCSoft has a title which was also called Project M and which they're going to announce today. It's been titled Blade & Soul. It's supposed to be a PS3 exclusive so that'll be interesting to see. But as for us, we haven't forgotten about our Fall Project. There will be a new trailer up next month.

This is a video for NCSoft's Project M,

Not to be confused with 4PP's Project M

Here's some more art. Caution: Kinda makes our trailer look like shit.

What If....

So many events are determined by the smallest of factors. The smallest push from one direction sends fates tumbling in the other. I've thought about this before, but this week's show reminded me of what I had been wanting to say for a while.

So Blu-ray won the format wars. Sony finally beat the odds and over came their Beta Max, Mini Disc, and UMD trends. It's easy to have seen the outcome when you look back on it. The Playstation 3 was the determining factor for Blu-ray winning out. It didn't matter which movie companies were behind which. It didn't matter about storage capacity or disc cost. What mattered most was ease and cost for the consumer to adopt the format. I'm fine with Blu-ray winning out. I didn't own a bunch of HD-DVD movies or the Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive. But I can't help but feel that HD-DVD handed over the match when they let the 360 come out without HD-DVD built in. Think about it, had Microsoft's system come out with the originally planned HD-DVD drive, Blu-ray wouldn't have stood a chance against that kind of a head start.

The only problems I could have forseen were hardware issues, but the XB360 had enough problems anyways, what would have been a few more? I just thought it was kinda funny if you think that the HD format wars was decided basically lost by the company who was supposed to be supporting it.

David

So undeniably awesome. Too bad only like 3 people know what is going on.

This warmed my heart. I will forgive this game for the beating it gave me last time I played and will continue on. Really, I may not have started playing it again if I hadn't seen it. Saw this over in a GAF thread btw.

A quiz for you - My Soul Calibur 4 impressions

I remember a similar type of game on Reading Rainbow. Or maybe it was some other show. Anyways.

I see:
a) A large red balloon.
b) A very large ripe tomato.
c) Taki's left jubble.

Answer at the bottom.

Ok. So I don't really play fighting games all that seriously anymore. I was pretty hardcore about Tekken years ago, but beyond that, I rarely dabble in the genre. I also firmly believe that unless you have people to play with, who want to take the game seriously, you should never buy a fighting game. Even with online play.

Well, this game comes very close to being that exception. I was overwhelmed last night playing it for the first time. You can spend hours and hours unlocking characters, stages, weapons, and CAS(create-a-soul) equipment. There is just an insane amount of options and challenges in this game. I could imagine spending more time just unlocking things Soul Calibur 4 than I would with a typical FPS game we see nowadays.

It could get very tedious just explaining everything I saw in the game last night. And since I have only scratched the surface of what Soul Calibur 4 has to offer, I will simply list a few pros and cons based on what I have played so far.

Pros:
- I love how you can change the outfits of the default characters. If you though Ivy was revealing before, wait till you see her in just her unmentionables.
- The Star Wars additions are just cool. Vader and Starkiller seemed weird for me at first; but when I played with them in their stages with Star Wars music in the background, they won me over.
- Sexy graphics
- Lots of jibble to the jubbles.
- Just the insane amount of options, modes, challenges, and unlocklables.
- Shura is a Cervantes clone. *happy face*

Cons:
- I hate how you can't change the weapon styles of the default characters, while you can do so if you create your own.
- The AI is terrible, overly annoying, and the game has limited difficulty options.
- The anime redesigns are just clone characters. And you can't changes their outfits.
- Ashlotte is an Astaroth clone. *sad face*
- Angol Fear is a Mina clone. *sad face*
- Almost too much to unlock.
- No KOS MOS items anymore I heard.

More impressions to come after I play more and go online.

New "Tenchu 4" Trailer

I really enjoyed the first 2 tenchu's for the PS1 and I kind of enjoyed Tenchu 3 for the PS2. I have no idea what to expect from the 4th installment on the Wii. Looks pretty cool though. Check out the new trailer:

New "Spider-man: Web of Shadows Trailer".... is Awesome

This new trailer for Spider-man: Web of Shadows is the first to show both story and gameplay elements together. While the game definitely looks similar to previous spider-man games, the fact that it is not tied to any of the films or specific comics (that I know of) intrigues me. Combat still looks smooth and incredibly satisfying and the story seems dark and creative. My only concern is that the game will lack the level of polish that open world environments deserve. Such was the case with Spider-man 3. I'm also curious to see how easy it is to control but i'll have to wait until the game hits this fall. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for more information. For now, enjoy the new trailer. By the way: Wolverine + Spider-man = FTW.

New Comic Section

So we've been struggling to keep up with the comics section that we started. We've only been able to get up a few comics even though we have about 30 strips already planned. But thanks to our community I've been able to start a new comic with just viewer sent in stuff. Thanks to thecosmicfly, icarus94, and ard for their submissions. I took them off the forums and made it a little easier for the public to be able to read through your stuff. Thanks also to bakedgoods17 for the banner and foolishmofo for the art at the top of the post. Especially thanks to Keyweez360 who started all this by making caricatures of us.

Again, thanks to the community. You guys are the best. You show up and make it an enjoyable experience for us. Seeing these comics made me laugh and all of us love to see stuff from you guys. We don't care if it's professional or amazing. It's really an incredible feeling just to see that people watch and then use that information to make fun of us. Those who have been around since the beginning and even people new to the site, thank you. So here's the new section for fan submitted comics, The 5th Player

David

Also, not to get big headed or anything, I also thought this one was awesome too, thanks thenext6

This week on the Feed

This one should be no surprise. I've very very excited about the game and there should be plenty to unlock. I will be playing this for online night this Friday so let me know if you are getting the PS3 version so you can participate. We should have this on Tuesday so come laugh at the bewbles with me.

This is the first Squaresoft game released for the PS2. It was very controversial back in the day for Square fans for the games length and genre change from RPGs. But whatever, it's a brawler and David and I will be playing it this week. Probably Tuesday night, so be there for be Square. Har har... Square... like Square the guys who made this game. I win the net.

David should be playing through the rest of this game this week. Come join him for some ape catching fun. Or are they monkeys. Did you know that monkeys and apes are not the same thing? It blew my mind the first time I heard. Tune in to find the truth about what the hell David is actually catching!

I will try to finish this game this week. I honestly don't know how distracted I will be by Soul Calibur or if I just give up out of frustration. But either way, you will see it in some capacity. AND FUCK THAT DAMN BOW AND ARROW BITCH!

Since Soul Calibur will probably run like shit online, I will probably playing a bunch of Metal Gear Online as well. Hopefully Konami will have fixed their cluster fuck of an online game by Friday night.

...as well as a couple of surprises.

Go here for our live streaming site.

Creepiest Trailer I Have Ever Seen

I saw this trailer just yesterday for the first time and Kotaku pointed out this morning that the trailer was not approved for U.S. audiences. The trailer is referred to as the Lullaby trailer for Dead Space and let me tell you, this thing creeps the shit out of me. Dead Space has been one of those titles that I initially wasn't very impressed with but media like this really gets me excited. This title is slowly becoming one of my most anticipated titles of 2008. Check it out:

Nick's 2008 List

Brad posted his list of games he intends to pick up or play before the years end so I figured I would go ahead and do the same. Here we go:

Multiplatform: (I will pick up all of these on PS3)
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
Dead Space
Ghostbusters
Tomb Raider Underworld
Mirror's Edge
Project Origin
Spider-man Web of Shadows
Silent Hill Homecoming
Far Cry 2
Prince of Persia
Quantum of Solace

PS3:

Siren: New Translation

Xbox 360:
Left 4 Dead
Fable 2
Gears of War 2

Those are all of my confirmed Day 1 pick ups. This list may change but I will keep you updated as the list grows.

The T-Virus Strikes Again

A long time ago, a trailer for a new animated Resident Evil movie surfaced depicting a t-virus outbreak at an airport. The trailer didn't really reveal much about the film except that it would star Claire Redfield and would be entirely in CG animation. At comic con 2008, Sony Entertainment/Capcom released a new full length trailer that reveals quite a bit more so lets take a look first:
The film is titled "Resident Evil: Degeneration" and is set 7 years following the events of Raccoon City and brings Leon and Claire back together to stop a bio terrorist leak at an airport. The virus spreads again after a single zombie is released into the airport and quickly escalates. The new trailer suggests that this is the same bad ass Leon that we grew to love in Resident Evil 4. Claire also seems to be back in full force as they face off against more undead and what seems like a new tyrant. It may be a return to classic resident evil but it looks awesome and I can't wait to see the movie when it hits this fall. The movie will see a theatrical release in Japan and will hit DVD and Blu Ray later this year. I will most definitely pick this up in Blu Ray format!

Max Payne Movie Actually Looks Good...

So I was surprised by the Max Payne trailer. I know its a little late because the trailer hit the net a few weeks ago but I finally took the time to watch it and it looks surprisingly good. Not sure what's up with the black winged angel but the movie looks like it might at the very least be entertaining. Mila Kunis in black leather looks like it will make the price of admission worth it even if the movie bombs anyways... check it out.

NO! Don't you do it Iga!!

I already cry myself to sleep every night because of you! You have ruined one of my favorite franchises. And now you are trying to do to it what will officially kill it! You will make people forget. You will make people think Castlevania is only worthy of nostalgia.

I hate you.

Die in a fire.

Ok. I know this sounds a bit harsh. In a recent interview over on Wired, Koji Igarashi talks of his upcoming turd fighting game on the Wii. I believe the official title has been changed to Wiilsuckslyvania.

But that isn't what caught my eye. The interviewer brought up Mega Man 9!!!! That fucking interviewer. Piece of shit. Well Iga in response said:

"I'm watching that very closely to see how it does. Myself, I'm a big retro gaming fan, so if it is successful that definitely opens up doors for what I can do."

I get angry just pasting that quote. I've already posted how I feel about Mega Man 9, and that was a series I don't give a shit about. Now Iga is thinking about doing this to Castlevania?????

Don't look at Mega Man 9. Look instead at the beautiful sprite work in Wario Land for the Wii. That's the direction you want to go.

I'm too angry to type any more.

What are Projects B, Q, & Z?

Everyone remember Pandemic Studios? The company that merged with Bioware back in 2005 and was eventually made part of EA's vast library of resources in 2007. Despite the fact that I have not played many of their games, there is no denying that their studios produce great games. The company is responsible for Star Wars Battlefront I & II, Destroy All Humans I & II, and the Mercenaries franchise. Personally, I did not play many of these games because they simply aren't my style. I dabbled in Destroy all Humans and liked it a lot but I prefer to tackle games with a more serious tone. I never really played Star Wars Battlefront because I prefer open world Star Wars RPG's similar to KoToR. However, all of these games are known for quality and polish which is a fact that deserves my respect. In fact, Mercenaries II may be my first experience with a Pandemic game and it looks to be a real treat when it hits in October. I should also mention "Saboteur", a game that follows a french Resistance fighter through a colorless world war II setting. The game looks cool and has a really interesting approach to its presentation. So why bring up Pandemic now? Is it because they have made some new announcement concerning Mercenaries II? No. In fact, I want to talk about the little known projects that are currently shrouded in mystery.
If you browse through Pandemic's website, you will notice that they are currently working on three mystery projects dubbed projects B, Q, and Z. What could they be and why have we heard next to nothing about them? The website promises that the first project currently in development, project B, will be one of the teams most ambitious projects to date. Project Q is said to be one of the team's most exciting projects. Project Z however is apparently the project that will be shrouded in the most secrecy. Hm they all seem pretty secret to me. I'm willing to guess that that Project Q and Z will be new IP's but B on the other hand... I have an idea of what that might be... and it has giddy.
It is curious however that Pandemic does in fact own the rights to the next Batman game. In fact, just yesterday, Gary Oldman let it slip that a Dark Knight game is in development. Rumors have been flying around for months that Pandemic is working on the game adaptation to the Dark Knight. The movie is out now and people have probably be been wondering why there isn't a game to coincide with its release. After seeing such a well produced film, I find myself a little skeptical of wanting a game but if Pandemic is in fact working on the game then the game has 2 things going for it. First, the team seem to be taking the extra time necessary to make the game and not worrying about releasing at the same time as its film release. This might also mean that the game is bigger in scope than previous movie titles and might even be an open world Gotham City. Let the rumors begin. Second, the team seems to have a knack for making solid, fun games. Only time will tell and I can't wait for an official announcement.

-Nick

Because you can never have too much Project Origin footage.

Am I Really Finished With Majora's Mask?

Last night I clumsily finished through the end of the second Zelda game on the Nintendo 64. After a few hours and a few frustrated viewers, I, of course, made my inevitable triumph over the game and the credits rolled. There were a few who asked if I'd be going back to retrieve all the masks.

Before

After thinking about this for 5 minutes, I can safely say NO!! While I am a bit intrigued by the story of sidequests, the amount of time management in game involved with the process of mask collecting is not worth the time it would take to go back and get all of the masks. In addition, in reality the actual process would consist of people in chat telling me where to go and how to get the masks instead of me going out and searching for them by listening to clues. So instead of actual gameplay it'd kinda be a game of fetch while following directions. Sorry guys, I'm not really into that.

Also since I was able to beat the game last night without the use of the Fierce Deity, I really can't see any reason to go back to "complete" the game. I am, however, considering fighting Majora's Mask again once more. There's something that I promised to do but wasn't able to uphold last night. So here's to putting a smile on their face.

After?

Thanks to everyone who stuck around last night and for whoever it was who sent me this picture. You're a regular, I just plain forgot who it was. Also a special thanks to Corvus who stuck around for who know why.

Alpha Protocol - Mass Effect meets James Bond?

This one slipped under my radar at E3. I really wished they had debuted some actual footage of Alpha Protocol in action. I was not interested in the game till I heard Obsidian Entertainment was working on the project. This is the company, formed by former Interplay employees, best known for following up on bigger Bioware projects. Knights of the Old Republic 2 and Neverwinter Nights 2 were both worthy successors to the Bioware originals.

Alpha Protocol
appears to be more or less a modern day Mass Effect. And that sounds pretty friggen awesome. Here is an interview about the game.

E3: Lara Returns...

Gametrailers.com just posted the first trailer for the new Tomb Raider: Underworld along with a developer interview. Speaking as a fairly new Tomb Raider fan, I am excited for this game though it doesn't seem to be anything revolutionary for the series. Luckily though, Crystal Dynamics has traditionally revolutionized the series with a good story and solid gameplay all around and that's fine by me. Check it out:

The Dark Knight...

So it's about 3:00 am on the 18Th and we just returned from seeing the Dark knight. I'm sure we will talk about all of our impressions on the podcast this week but I wanted to get some of my thoughts out there while the movie is still fresh on my mind. I'll start by saying that this is a beautifully crafted film that both builds on what made its predecessor a success and then goes on to surpass it. While I do feel the movie stumbled in a few places, the film never felt like it was dragging on. I won't spoil anything but this movie does what so many other super hero movies such as Spider-man 3 and Daredevil have failed at in regards to the way it handles its villains. Every performance was spot on and the movie has so many twists and turns that I would say it is impossible to go into this movie knowing whats going to happen.

In regards to Heath Ledger's performance, I must give the man props. He took this role and ran with it. He gave the joker a personality and a presence that is both comical and disturbing. His performance made this movie much darker in tone and set the groundwork for a much more mature Batman than anything we have seen in the past. At times, this movie scared me.
Ill end by saying that this is the first movie in a long time that has really kept me on the edge of my seat and left me in a daze by the time it came to an end. I can't wait to see it again tomorrow in Imax...

E3: New Silent Hill Trailer + Gameplay

So this is what I wanted most from Konami's press conference, some new gameplay footage with a new trailer for Silent Hill Homecoming. The game still looks great despite the fact that its hard to see anything in this trailer. It does look like it has taken some western influence by amping up the action a little bit but overall, still looks dark and broody so i'm happy. You know me, I like f***ed up S*** like this...

And here is some of the new gameplay demo that was shown at the conference: The game still looks very silent hill but by adding more action sequences, the game looks like it may be a lot faster paced with a much better and much more satisfying combat system. Now whether or not this faster pace is a good thing is yet to be seen. I'm leaning towards yes though.

E3: Konami Press Conference in Progress

So Konami is holding their E3 Press Conference as I type this and I am getting all the action straight from Kotaku's liveblogging service. Very nice Kotaku... very nice.

-Anywho, right now, they are showing a trailer for Brad's most anticipated game of the year, Castlevania: Judgement (I think this is the title). Yes folks, that is the 3D castlevania fighting game for the Wii! (as for as im concerned, this is passable so I will leave the details to Brad... if he so wishes to cover it)

- Come on! Show me some new Silent Hill!!

-They made some announcements concerning Metal Gear Online expansions to be available July 17th.. isn't that tomorrow?

- Also, Konami will also have an official booth for their new music game, "Rock Revolution" at Linkin Park's next tour... I'm not quite sure what this means but if I go to one of these shows, I will be sure to bring you the scoop.

-New Silent Hill trailer!! Can't wait.

Ill post more after they actually reveal some of this footage. Anywho, thanks Kotaku for bringin us the scoop as it happens.

More E3 Nintendo Impressions

While broadcasting last night there was a moment which perfectly captured my opinions about Nintendo's E3 Press Announcement. Here it is in video form.

PS - I still love you Nintendo, but come on, you deserved it.

E3: Interview Extravaganza

So here is some more footage from various demonstrations that have really caught my eye:
2 Parts of a developer walkthrough of Prince of Persia. I feel really excited about this game but I need to feel how the controls work. Im sure it will be fine based on Ubisofts history in making simple controls but I still want to get behind the wheel... soon.

Developer Interview with Producer of Far Cry 2: Game still looks great. My only concern at this point is that the story will take a backseat to the open world gameplay.

Interview with producer of Dead Space: I wasn't excited about this game at first but it has definitely grown on me. Looks very disgusting and intense... I like that.

Interview with Producer of Mirrors Edge: This just might be my game of show this year. The game looks fantastic and I cant wait to experience the game with it launches this winter.

This is cool. But if I can't tunnel through a mountain to flank my enemies, I'm gonna be mad.

E3: I Am Alive Teaser Trailer

You may have heard us joke around about this game during our last podcast because Jade Raymond is indeed involved in this title. However, I see this trailer and see potential for a fun game depending on how they approach the gameplay. The premise revolves around a character named Adam who struggles to survive after a large natural disaster occurs. The trailer suggests that natural resources such as water have become rare and have created hostility between other survivors. I still want to see some gameplay and see what the overall concept is. Anywho, the trailer looks interesting and I will be keeping my eyes on this one.
