Dead Space for the Wii? Approved

Dead Space was my "Game of the Year 2008" and was by far one of the most original horror games in years. It was ambitious in the fact that it tried so many new things in regards to it's mechanics and overall game design. Games like "Alone in the Dark" tried equally as hard to do something new but ultimately fell short. The game shined from a technical standpoint as well so you can imagine my surprise when EA announced "Dead Space" for the Wii. While I was orininally skeptical, I am now excited because it seems that I will have a chance to delve deeper into the Dead Space lore in a way that could tide me over until the inevitable, next gen sequel.

EA has officially announced "Dead Space: Extraction", a prequel to the original game that will be coming exclusively to the Wii this fall. Aside from new story elements and the inclusion of "Wii Motion Plus", there are few details worth mentioning. I anticipate picking this game up day and date with release. Until then, check out the trailer below:

... it sounds pretty cool. Aiming with the wiimote to shoot off the limbs of aliens. But like most Wii games that were ported from the Xbox and PS3, the graphics are probably gonna be really bad, like CoD: WaW

But then again, I would love to pick it up on my friends wii to get into the story for this version.

AznSenzation: it's not a port, at all. Period. It's built for the Wii from the ground up. And from the trailer it looks at least as good as something like The Conduit, which is genuinelly something that could not graphically be done on last-gen consoles.

Anyway, colour me enthusiastic (I picture enthusiasm as bright yellowish-golden colour, with a hint of pink). I do wish, though, that somebody would confirm for me that it's not an on-rails shooter. As an FPS it looks fantastic, but if I can't move around and explore a Dead Space game, count me out.

In a bizarre twist of genre rehabilitation, the on-rails style is really clogging up the Wii's release schedule these days. I believe EA's official statement refers to something along the lines of a "guided camera" system or somesuch, which sounds to me like "rail shooter" in the arcane tongue of marketing boardroom natives.

I think it could be cool, you could turn the Wii remote to shoot horizontal or vertical. Although for some reason, just like Quater, I can see this being on rails. I hope to god it's not, but it wouldn't surprise. It would just greatly disappoint me.

God damn it. I don't care if its going to be on the Wii but why does it have to be only on the Wii?

"I do wish, though, that somebody would confirm for me that it's not an on-rails shooter."

I'm going to have a hard time doing that when IGN confirmed that it was indeed an on rails shooter...

and personally im a little bit pissed, seeing as I wanted to play Dead Space, not House of the Dead: In Space.

They have not revealed whether or not its on rails. I will make a post when it is revealed. I would assume that Redwood Shores wouldn't dare take Dead Space into the realm of rail shooters though.

i enjoyed dead space a lot, but it was still too ass to be game of the year for me for one single reason.

nick, remember a certain point where you must protect someone from necromorphs whilst they open a door for you from across a deep pit?
think about who was opening the door?
now keep in mind THEY WERE OPENING A DOOR.
also keep in mind THEY WERE BIENG ATTACKED.

now if you can guess what i mean without spoilers, is that the plot of a game of the year?, it just didn't make sense. they tried to build too much mythos too fast and ended up restricting themselves to the point where you know the events couldn't happen that way because the story itself has before and after that contradicted that being possible.

so i assume that you won't be playing as isaac since its a prequel, and the chance that you die at the end are very high

Nick I think you should read this

http://wii.ign.com/articles/954/954895p1.html

Mainly this part

IGN: Dead Space for 360 is a third-person action game. This is not true of the Wii version. The title shares more in common with Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, right? Please explain how gameplay works.

Steve: Our gameplay takes advantage of a guided and cinematic camera which allows us to frame the action on screen and deliver fantastic and gripping action sequences packed with loads of scares. We plan to evolve the game by focusing on a frenetic first-person perspective that we believe will enhance the tension and horror the player experiences as they play the game. The unique gameplay and first-person perspective allows us to combine a high action horror movie experience within an interactive environment.

I think it's on rails

It's good that awesome game like this get multiconsole so it give a fair play to all those that can't afford more then one console.

On rail shooter... ugh. My expectations for this game just fell like suiciders at Beachy Head.

Before clicking that trailer the promise I had for Dead Space Wii was extremely high despite some naysayer comments, because DS on 360/PS3 with wii controls sounded amazing. I wasn't going to judge the game on graphics because a) haven't seen anything of it yet and b) if last gen games could empty our bowls in fear then a Wii game should still have the chance to visually and aurally do so. I dare say that the Wii controls gave me a lot of hype to see more, even though I didn't have much faith in them anyway.

Then I read this blog post which revealed some new info. It's actually a prequel most likely set on the Colony on Aegis 7. So we could be seeing the events that happened in the comics in-game. Now I was super excited for this game. Not a direct port, built from the ground up, Dead Space gameplay with motion controls. Absolutely excited. Watched the trailer, impressed by the graphics (Surprisingly), got a FPS vibe, then got an on rails shooter vibe, clicked Neohs link, hype dropped down. A LOT.

I'm sorry but I did not want Dead Space to turn into a reskin UC/HotD/Time Crisis. I swear if one thing they boast about is 'multiple path choosing' to create a sense of freedom I'll give up on this game.

What made Dead Space (And generally any horror game) frightening and fear inducing is that you had the freedom to move and explore the enviroments, despite being somewhat linear. You could turn around to see nothing and then turn back to find your skull being nibbled on by a Necromorph. That sense of freedom meant you could never really anticipate when something would happen. In an on rail shooter you're guided by the game and it sets up the situation for you. It'll be total action with dreary enviroments and enemies to make it seems horrific.

I'm not saying it's going to be a bad game. Hell until I see some proper gameplay footage I won't fully condemn it. All I'm saying is this is a wasted opportunity to give us a true Dead Space game with true motion controls.

There is supposed to be co-op gameplay, and I don't really see them incorperating that into a third person shooter on the Wii. So how much do you people want to bet this will just be another rail shooter? Meh.

I wanted Dead Space ported to the Wii, RE4 plays amazingly on the Wii and I think Dead Space could have been just as good if not better with the Wii controls.
