So tomorrow, the first western developed entry in my favorite gaming franchise EVER hits retail. Silent Hill is something that is truly special to me no matter how much Brad hates on its less than stellar combat and its strange, obscure puzzles. The game has always had this charm to it that other horror games have lacked. I merely stumbled upon the first Silent Hill in a used game store years back and picked it up because I needed a new game to play. Little did I know what I was getting myself into. From their, the series spawned several sequels that secured the franchise in gaming history as one of the most disturbing yet beautiful games in the industry. The games feature superb art direction, excellent (yet confusing) plots, and beautiful music that come together to make an experience that really doesn't compare to anything else out there. So it's been 4 years since the release of Silent Hill 4 and I have been starving for a new game. Silent Hill Origins was good but it merely calmed my yearning temporarily. Before the game hits shelves, there are a few things I want to address.
The first reviews of this game have started to flood in and they have been all over the board. With most other Silent Hill's, reviewers typically agreed on a general score but this game has scores as low as "6/10" and as promising as an "A". This is probably for varying reasons but here is what I think. First of all, Silent Hill is a game that is hard to grasp. If you don't pick up on the game's charm, you are probably very confused as to what is so great about it. I have read several reviews already that have mentioned many of the same qualities to the game but the funny thing is that some people treat them as faults and some treat them as positives.
Many reviewers have mentioned that the games combat has been dramatically improved but the lower scores tend to refer to this as a feature that removes some of the fear from the game and makes it a little too easy. Others refer to it as a much welcomed improvement to the series. They see it was something the game has needed for years. Also, many have mentioned the games story as being a bit more straight forward than any of the previous games even though it shares similar themes. Once again, reviewers seem to be split on this element as well. To make a long story short, I think it comes down to how much you identify with the older entries in the series.
Some don't like change because they thing it takes away from what made the earlier games so good. Others welcome it as an improvement and an evolution to the series. Despite this difference in opinion, I seem to think that most people agree that "Double Helix", the new western developer, has captured the spirit of the franchise and delivered an acceptable entry in the franchise. As for my predictions concerning my own reactions to the game. I expect that I will like the game and respect the developers for trying to take the franchise in a new direction. Of course, I will be playing the game live on the feed and talking about the game on this weeks podcast. The only question that remains is: "How will Brad receive the game?" Expect my full impressions on the podcast this week and my full review sometime next week after I finish the game. Be sure to tune in on Thursday night at 10:00 pm central time to get a look at the game in action.
P.S.- Did I mention that I really can't wait to get my hands on the games soundtrack? Akira Yamaoka... you are a genius.

Ya, I am seriously starting to get very excited about this game, it seems like it will have the same effect as the other ones, so here's to hoping I will be pleased with my purchase.

I'm still pissed off that i was told that it was gonna be released on 9/30 instead of shipped 9/30 :S. I skipped my math class to go buy it lol. I guess I'll have to go early tomorrow then :A.
Sorry Moosechives. Hope that hasn't painted your perception of all "Undisclosed Video Game Retailer" employees. Allow me to rectify... All game release dates online or in retail computers are ship dates which means that they will not arrive until the following day.
2nd- The only time the release date and retail are the same is when the title is Street Dated. Is u look in a pre order list at a store, is should say something like (SD 09/30) after the title. This means it will be in stores on that day.
3rd- This is where pre ordering comes in. If a game gets 0 reserves, it may not be over-nighted to that store meaning that game may arrive a day or two later than everywhere else.
Hope this helps.
Yeah, that makes sense, and of course i dont hate all "Undisclosed Video Game Retailers" just the ones that work at the one I go to :p. They know jack shit about games and even the other Gamestop upstairs says it lol.
ARgh, it's too bad I'm gonna miss the broadcast of SH. I hope you guy gonna record-highligh the whole play trew kind of like Siren. It would be great, if not, I'm gonna have to go trew the archive when I come back.
The viewer in me wants to watch it.
But the gamer in me wants to play it.
what to do what to do
i'll play it first.sorry.but make someone sure to make episodes
If you want to play the game, I strongly encourage you to do that. The point of our broadcast is to encourage gaming and help game sales rather than divert sales. Have fun! We will have it highlighted into episodes like before.
Hmm, IGN doesn't seem to be pleased with Homecoming either.

He seems to sight the improved combat as a negative factor on the game, removing most of the horror. I guess you were right about how people view what the series should be and what it should improve. Hey, at least the creepy nurses still have epic cleavage. lol. Shame I can't be there to watch it live, but I look foward to watching the episodes. Here's wishing the best of luck.
Yeah, IGN gave it a measly 6.7. That kinda surprised me. I bought the game a few hours ago and I played maybe 45 minutes in. So far, its not as scary but what can I say only minutes into a game. Right now I think it deserves damn well better than a 6.7.
Ign gave it a low score because it isn't a shooter :P, that aside, if you look at other review sites they all seem to say that it will make Silent Hill fans happy, which is good enough for me. I don't care if it isn't "revolutionary" or "groundbreaking", as long as it's a solid entry in the series, then people should be happy.
there, just my thoughts.

sounds good nick.and i agree with you punch
the point of a game is to have some fun, not perfection
as long as its good and a bit scary im good
Sweet, maybe when you finally reach the last part of the game you'll get even more viewers than Brad did when he beat the last SH. Whats with people flocking over to the channel whenever you guys beat scary games anyway?
Great stuff, can't wait to see how Silent Hill has made it's debut into the "HD Gen". I might be absent for the showing though, considering I'm going to play through it myself.
I bought the game tonight and spent a few hours broadcasting/playing it, Silent Hill fans will not be dissapointed, that is for sure. The game gets the environment right.
Its a good edition to the Silent Hill Franchise, Nick will poo bricks when he plays it :P
