I've got a decision to make today. The Conduit.
I've never been all that excited about this title. First off, it's an FPS which in all honesty just isn't my genre of choice. Insert a generic Alien Race invades Earth storyline coupled with a chotchy name like Michael Ford for the main character and I basically passed the game on the spot.
I did have some time with the game at E3. Again, I wasn't too impressed. At E3 however, it was only a multiplayer demo so I credit that to it's lackluster experience and it's early playstation visuals. I can say though that I wasn't blown away by the controls, but they were competent, which I still haven't seen since First Person Shooters came out on the Wii. So in that respect, I've got some sort of hope.
So what is the debate here? The reviews have been mostly meh. Nothing fantasic. I was never interested in the game to begin with. It should be a pretty clear cut decision.
The reason's I'm thinking about picking this title up.
A.) It's a Wii title, you take what you can get.
B.) I don't really pay attention to reviews, Bionic Commando (Loved)
C.) This is the type of game you want to support.
I'm not saying everyone go out and buy this game. It's unproven, but we need to take chances sometimes, both in development and in purchases. Through working on the podcast, I've learned that if I had access to all the game I wanted to play, I'd play a shit load more games. Sometimes however, that isn't possible and it ends up hurting my game playing experiences.
Maybe I'll start doing GameFly. Anyone with impressions about The Conduit?
Thanks,
David

im really surprised there hasnt been more FPS for the wii. Although i havent played games like metroid or even red steel, it would seem that the genre would be well suited for the wiimote. I havent followed this very closely, but the success of this may influence how many more fps's we see on the wii in the future.
Probably wont pick this up at first, but if the word of mouth is good enough i may give it a try
I think the wii is simply the wrong console for fps's with the exception of metroid prime.
I really think that to have a good fps you need two analog sticks (no i don't class metroid prime as a shooter)
If you want to see some of the beginning Conduit in action, check this David:

Uhhhh, that game looks pretty lame.
They really need to port that FPS samurai arcade game to the Wii.
Trynna remember the title of it, now.
Join the club, David. Some of us only have one console or less, and can only afford one or two games a year, max.
I never saw the appeal in all honesty. I mean, if this was on the PS3/360, would anyone still give a shit?
I plan on getting it. There just isn't that many great games on the Wii and this one supposed to pretty good. It's true that it would be dubbed as a "run of the mill" shooter if it had been on another console, but the Wii control is what sets it apart from others.
I can't say I am all that excited about this game either. But I sort of feel I should at least try it out. Looks like I'll be renting this one.
Those who view this game as just another shooter seem to not see the resemblance to Perfect Dark on the Nintendo 64, one of the greatest FPS games yet made. The Conduit isn't Wii's Halo (for goodness sakes, people!), it's a spiritual successor to PD, and those who cherish that classic game have identified The Conduit as such at first play.
I (finally) have my copy, and, though I'm having a bit of a time getting back into using the Wiimote again, it's clear that this is succeeding well in bringing back classic N64-style FPS gaming. I've loved the FPS genre as a whole for years, and I can say that nothing plays quite like Perfect Dark/Goldeneye (or, of course, The Conduit). I still don't have a final verdict on the game (and I'm not interested in online multiplayer), but, for me at least, it's only getting better as time goes on. I particularly appreciate the unlockable cheats, again, like Perfect Dark and Goldeneye. While there are achievements of sorts built into the game, having some more useful goals to work toward raises the replayability beyond simply gaining gamerscore.
If you do end up renting/buying it, make sure to spend a lot of time customizing your controls. My semi-final control scheme is worlds different from the standard layout.
You'll enjoy it while you're playing it until you realize that the price wasn't worth what The Conduit offers.
well david, ign gave it 8.6, but it is Ign... so who knows. Seems like it's the kind of game you need to try yourself.
really, the conduit is pretty generic. stories been done to death, the aliens and their voices are done to death, even the lead character doesn't stand put much, hell even the artstyle, not graphics, but the artstyle is so standard in first person shooters now adays that it just looks like anything else.
no, the only thing that makes The conduit different are its controls with its impressive options of changing dead zone and choosing from many different control schemes makes it stand out greatly, not just as a wii game but as a consle fps in general. there have been few games in recent years that have given you so many options. it may take a while but if you mess with it, you will find a setting that is perfect for you.
the other reason is because of the fact that this is on the wii. because of how pethetic 3rd party support has been for the wii, it has been reduced to nothing more then a toy in many peoples eyes, though technicly all the consles are childrens toys though many of you would never admit it.
in a way, by buying The Conduit and it getting good sales, this could very well help other 3rd parties be encouaged to make games for the wii. hell, they may even use the same engine that The Conduit uses. granted i would hope they would change the artstyle to be something a little more creative but meh, their choice and everything.
so really, i suggest renting the game. see if you like it. choose the settings that are best for you cause that will make or break the game. try the multiplayer. the game sadly suffers from halo 2 and 3 syndrom. a lack luster single player with more work into multiplayer. though in the conduit's case, the single player is better then average.
I will buy it personally. I just want to get it since i didn't get madworld. I feel guilty for not supporting this genera on the wii that we all wanted when we first saw the wii.
