Should I care about Sacred 2?
Should I care about this Sacred 2 thing? We all know Diablo 2 is in my Top 5 games of all time -- and that my recent discovery of Soma Bringer has certainly been scratching that itch, but what about a good console loot game I could play on the feed?
The game has to have great loot though. I don't just mean "many different items" either. The loot has to have cool modifiers that really affect the player outside of simple damage and defense, and the system needs to have a rarity spectrum, as well as random modifiers.
The skills/class system also needs to be deep enough so that I can encounter the same class as myself and still see a difference in character setup.
Also, which console should I get it on if I did get it? I think I heard that the PS3 version is the lead console platform. Is this true?
Should I just get Demon Souls instead?
Is anyone getting this?
Tough questions.
Brad

I'll just leave you a more in depth reason of why not to purchase Sacred 2.
For one I bought the game earlier today only to trade it in after about 4 hours of playing with a friend for the co-op. That seems like a cool idea, but it's not. You can't share loot, and anything you pick up most likely won't be able to be worn by your character since the loot has very specific qualifications i.e character race etc.
The fighting mechanic is quite terrible as you map a weapon to one of the face buttons and then repeatedly hit said button with a 50-50 chance of hitting anything. Plus, enemies attack in large groups and once you start attacking a single enemy, it take a good 4-5 seconds to stop hitting that enemy and attack another;one that has been slashing at you from the beginning of the battle.
The menu system is janky as well, although some say you get used to it after a while, but I don't see why someone would take the time with that garbage.
The quests are boring and not worth reading, or listening to terrible voice acting, and the "huge immersive world" is nothing more than an empty pre-determined filth map with lame enemies.
The only cool things I enjoyed slightly were weapon choices and armor, which did nothing, and being able to single handedly control certain aspects of spells ( modifying points to increase damage etc.)
I played it on the ps3 as well, so I'm not sure if it was lead console or not. Framerate issues, screen tearing, even with hdmi 720.
I'd wait for Dragon Age or try your hand at Demon Souls perhaps;your choice of course.
One thing I forgot to mention which follows up with your loot statement, is that I don't believe you can see what loot an enemy has dropped until you pick it up, which makes it even more apprehensive in it's choices. However, you can press a button that picks everything up within a radius of a large green circle
This circle can be adjusted though, as well as running over a body to gather loot, in the main menu with calibration options like : certain class potions to pick up, certain weapon grades to pick up.
I may be wrong on the whole " not seeing what the loot is until you pick it up" but my friend and I certainly couldn't figure it out.
Diablo 2 is in your top 5? Really? Care to try to explain why?
I started saying this in chat, got confused for a sec.
In terms of the PStree vs Xbawks versions, definitely go with the PStree. The Xbawks version suffers from tons of technical flaws most likely due to whatever ghastly compression was used to fit the game, which took up 20gb+ on the PC, into 1 single DVD9. From sluggish movements to other odd problems, it's a plain horrible port. PS3 is much better on the technical front, but still not perfect. A better framerate, but still not stable.
Not that the PC version was exactly the spokesgame for technical superiority... it still has quite a bit of issues after half a million patches.
As for gameplay/story. Not really up to that Diablo par you're looking for. It's got it's hack and slashish moments, but for the most part you're running around being frustrated at how, despite the fact you just walked 300 miles to find out you had to go some other way, the quest you're on is meaningless.
I decided to import Demon's Souls awhile ago and it turned out to be one of the best video game related decisions I have ever made.
The game is a ton of fun and is among the best games I've played this gen.
Even though it can be insanely hard at times it's still not hard in the sense that it feels "cheap". The combat is pretty fun and you can actually get GOOD at the combat. Not just by getting better gears but actually by improving your skills/timing etc. Every enemy has a certain way to how you can beat it and when you figure out how to take it down you'll be able to do it even with pretty crappy gear. Obviously, having great gear will make it far easier for you. Also, depending on which class you pick and weapon you choose some enemies are easier to kill than others.
Not to mention the game is gorgeous and has really nice animations.
I highly recommend that you read Eurogamers review of it, they gave it a 9/10.
If you're already interested in it, it might push you over the edge. It worked on me :)
can't really speak much on the Sacred 2 or Demon Souls front. As far as games similar to Diablo 2 go though I think the closest I have found is the PC game "Titan Quest". Though I haven't really got very far into it yet, it feels (and plays) very much like Diablo 2 did.
The closest games I can recall to the near isometric action-RPG style as far as consoles go though are mostly just the likes of Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance and Champions of Norrath.
They didn't really have a lot of
depth to the character classes though, especially compared to the likes of Diablo 2.
I see what you're saying Iront18...but from where I'm coming from, that kind of gameplay is just another romp down memory-lane. I'm not saying that nostalgia trumps ease of use in any way, shape, or form, but its this kind of game that made me brag to my friends about how I got through this one part. The inane dungeon crawls, the spamfest boss fights, the fun-yet-unsophisticated loot system: To the average gamer these are ANYTHING but selling points, but as for me I say "Hell yes, it's back!".
So, basically what I'm trying to say is that its a matter of perspective. If you feel this is something you'd like to play, then just go for it, Brad.
Well i've tried it on the PC and loved it and i'm planning on buying it for the Xbox360 mainly because all my buddies don't have PS3s except 1 and Sacred 2 will work alot better playing with others. :)
Import the Asian version (not japanese) of Demon's Souls, it's hard as hell, but it is FANTASTIC.
i picked this up yesterday for ps3 and i gotta say its not that bad. ive noticed a few of the problems that iront mentioned, but imo its nothing that makes it unplayable or any less fun. It plays a lot like champions of norrath. the menus seem a little complicated and as far as i can tell there is no way to pause the game (wtf), but overall its been pretty enjoyable
