One Small Step For...

I can't help but feel a certain amount of pride. Asian Pride.

Not AZN Pride, the Asian one. While watching the new Star Trek movie and enjoying it, I was thoroughly surprised to see John Cho in the movie.

I was aware of the character Asian American character Hikaru Sulu, It never dawned on me they would have to cast him in the new movie as well.

I'm not very familiar with the original series, but I was shocked when about half way through the movie, it was he that saved the day. Without mentioning spoilers, he and a few group members are sent on a mission to disable something. In a fury of karate kicks and sword techniques, it is he, the Asian actor who defeats the bad guys.

John Cho, you've come a long way from being the MILF guy in American Pie and Harold Lee in Harold and Kumar. You're probably the most well known Asian actor in America right now, enjoy it buddy. You've earned it.

David

I would also I like to point out that the original Actor George Takei is Japanese American, while Cho is Korean-American. It's fine that they're changing it up. But since they not going for complete accuracy, I would like to throw my name in the ring. Should John Cho hold out for more money in the next movie, I am fully qualified and available to fit the stereotype even though I'm Chinese American.

Oh yeah, Eric Bana....still a horrible Actor.

I have to agree with you, Nero didn't really catch my attention, but I guess that's the point of it, since it's the first movie in an all ready announced series.

Don't play down the importance of his role in Harold and Kumar. That was a much bigger step if anything.

Bana...has his moments. Cho is getting pretty popular, he did well as Sulu.

I was a little suprised when I heard John Cho was casted as Sulu. I was kind of holding out for a Japanese actor, but then I read somewhere that George Takei had personally approved Cho being cast. I remember him saying something like, "Sulu represents all of Asia, not just Japan, though his name is Japanese". And I liked that. Damn George Takei is a badass.. you have a lot to live up to, John Cho! But I think he can do it.

Huh, didn't realise he was Harold. Learn something new every day. Its always good to feel pride.

Speaking of which, I haven't seen the film yet, but should I be feeling some British pride, ala Simon Pegg? Or did he mess up his role?

Im not a fan of Harold at all. Bana is a great actor if you had any taste for film ...but you do watch japans daytime dramas so I guess you cant be taken seriously anyway.

The Bana hate invalidates this blog post.

Bana just had some really shit roles and most of the movies he was in were directed horribly i.e. The Hulk. Munich was fantastic though, even though it was three freakin' hours long.
