FRAK! Why doesn't this genre exist anymore? I need your help!

Why am I looking for this game? I just finished a really great show and now I'm sad and want more. I want a free roaming 3d space shooter -- a game that lets me feel as if I'm in a dogfight from Battlestar Galactica. They actually made a game in this genre based on the BSG IP, but it's based on the cheesy original show from the 70s.

Here is some battle footage from the newer show:

Check out these restrictions before you start spamming recommendations.

Guidelines:

1. No big IP like Star Wars or Star Trek. A game like this will just pull me out of the fantasy I'm trying to construct in my head(pants).

2. Has to be on consoles. I need to be able to broadcast the game; so it needs to be on consoles.

3. No older than last console generation. I don't want it to looks like poo. Dreamcast may be acceptable as long as the game doesn't control like shit.

4. No rail shooters. I have to be able to fly around willy nilly. Meaning nothing like Star Fox.

5. No robot suits! If I wanted to play a mech game... I'd pop in my copy of ZoE 2.

Kind of like these games:

Freespace 2 (Volition - 1999)

Colony Wars
(Psygnosis - 1997)

I realize this game might not exist based on my set of rules. Just give me your ideas as close to the set guidelines. BUT NO PC GAMES!

Space sim/adventure games are awesome experiences, and I have had lots of fun with them.

Unfortunately, they are pretty much PC exclusive, due to the many buttons needed for controls, and their huge requirements. Not to say it cannot be done on consoles (which would get my money), but there really aren't any out for consoles.

There are some older ones out that just might run on your computer, but I don't know how you feel about that. I looked all over to find stuff for consoles for you, but I couldn't get a thing. Sorry.

If you're interested, see if these fit your PC requirements.

X2: The Threat
Darkstar 1
Freespace ( think you mentioned that one)
Freelancer

Again, If you don't want anything for PC I understand, but I really don't think theres anything out there currently for consoles.

Good luck if you find something!

There doesn't seem to be a lot of options following the guidelines you've placed.

My only other suggestion that pops into my head would be Warhawk, but seeing as thats not set in space and you've already played it I don't think thats viable.

I doubt there's a game out there that could tick off all the bulletpoints you want. The only thing that pops into my head when I think of 3D Space shooters are Star Wars games. Battlefront II, Rogue Squadron, Starfighter etc. if you can look past the first requirement those games are a blast to play. If not then well, there's not a lot I can think of.

Playing a Rogue Squadron game might be nice tribute to Factor 5 seeing as they've been shut down now.

The two other posters are right, space sims are almost exclusively PC and Star Wars/Trek territory.

I did search around to see if I could find anything that fits your requirements the best fit from what I read is probably Project Sylpheed, apparently there is a demo on Xbox Live so you can test it before you buy anything. Especially since reviews are really mixed.

God I miss that show already.

Just to add in.

Freespace 2 is still alive and is free to download with a huge modding community.

Just thought I'd put that out.

Also...

Starlancer was good as well

Freespace 2 still remains as the best though in every aspect.

Mostly out of luck.

As said before, Space sims died on consoles basically back in the PS era for reasons stated above as well.

Even if you were to broadcast them Hotel 626 style, I doubt David's computer could run them. =(

Regardless, I'll throw in X3: Terran Conflict into the hat of games on PC that would scratch that itch.

As I said in chat the other night, there is nothing that will fit all of your criteria, except a PC game.

I sent you an email describing how you can broadcast PC games more easily, provided you have a TV with the right port. If you didn't get the email (my emails don't go through a lot of the time), you just have to hook up the PC you'd use for gaming to a TV so it uses the TV as a monitor and then run the broadcast equipment the same way you do now. It should work, in theory.

Of course, system requirements are a bit of a problem, but the game that I recommend to the highest possibility, Freelancer, has some low requirements that you should be able to meet.

Again, though, if you remain disallowing PC games on the list, I think you're basically boned.

Well, the only games that come to mind are Star Wars games like Battlefront 2 and Rogue Squadron. Sorry, Brad there really aren't a whole lot of options.

I'm afraid that space sims are almost exculsive to pc. Freespace 2 is pc only...right?
you already talked about colony wars, however there are other colony wars games on the PSX, I belive there are two others.

There are too many space sims on the pc to count.

elite
oolite(free remake of elite)
Vegastrike
X2
Freelancer
Freespace/2

to name a few.

It indeed sucks that it's so difficult to find good/any console space sims these days...
...hold that thought.
Yup. After snooping around on gamespot I found that there is Wing Commander IV on the PSX. Starring Mark Hamill(Luke Skywalker) as a voice actor.

Sure, it looks like sh*t, but it's something

I tried that freespace 2 Battlestar mod somebody showed yesterday but it didn't work for me. The creator said that you didn't need the original game, is he wrong?
