MadBrad (Part 2) - Time to explain yourselves.

So remember when I wrote that angry blog post about poor MadWorld sales? No? How about now?

Well, I followed that up with a poll because I was curious about whom, out of our own community, actually bought the game. I was concerned about are the "hardcore" Wii owners and why they were not buying the game.

Here are the results:

Did you buy
MadWorld?

78 (8%) - Yes.

367 (37%) - No, and I have a Wii.

530 (54%) - No, I don't have a Wii.

The results surprised me to say the least. Only about 20% of the Wii owners who voted bought the game. Was I wrong to assume that we (our community) are the "hardcore"? I would have expected that number to be at least 50%. Do the Wii owners care to explain why they passed on the game? I'm more curious than anything. The game did get good reviews after all. We talked about it plenty and even played it on the feed the week it came out -- you guys were exposed to the game.

Next question: Why is it a bad idea to take a decent racing franchise and merge the vehicles with Walmart toy isle rejects?

April sales for ExciteBots: 13,000 (I didn't miss a zero).

I did not purchase Mad World because it looked too repetitive for my taste. Plus, the life system in that game also made me say 'no'. I was about to purchase the game until I actually saw you play it. After that, I knew it was not my kind of game.

Hopefully It'll do what psychonauts did and explode after it's release date.

I think Exitebots didn't sell alot because of the lack of brand recognition and the face that it was 50.00 dollars

I played part of Madworld at a friend's house but I found that my eyes always felt strained playing the game, which was probably due to the stylization of the graphics. Even if it weren't for the eye strain I probably still wouldn't have bought it simply because the gameplay got too repetetive too fast, and excessive violence really isn't my thing.

Does this make me any less hardcore? I don't think so. I'd just rather reinstall Homeworld than sit through ten hours of eyestraining violence.

I agree with the Pwrkaril. I felt the same way. The game looked too repetitive with every objective consisting of killing your enemies in various ways. The black and white visuals were nauseating to me and I absolutely could not stand the commentary and background music. I also considered the over-the-top violence to be unoriginal and bland. There were just simply too many games that have already capitalized on being extremely violent. For me, if i'm exposed to something long enough, i'll grow to tire of it. I now feel more drawn to games that are more diverse in their color palette, as well as their style of play. Recently boom blox, flower, and valkyria chronicles have been my favorites.

i downloaded it and so did all of my friends

BaroqueSilver here.
My reason for not purchasing the game is, well, I'm short on cash. And still short on cash. I lack a job to keep up to date.
As for the game, I missed out on watching you guys play it. But I did expect it to sell a lot more than it did also. I still plan on buying the game... someday.
I hope you aren't thinking of giving up on the Wii game producers. Nintendo gave the community something strange and new. It'll be a while for the companies to discover the right formula that works the Wii. They are barely starting to get it right.

I still want MadWorld, but Wii titles don't seem as compelling of a buy to me. I normally just end up getting a PS3/360 game instead. =/

I did not like the art and graphical style. I found it depressing, dull and stifling that the only flash of color in that world was the gushes of blood that would shoot out when you dismembered somebody.

I just didn't have much interest in it to begin with. The game looked fine, but, regardless of the system it's on, I don't find myself in need of a repetitive brawler. I do, however, have my copy of The Conduit on pre-order, so I can't be criticized for not supporting 'hardcore' games on the Wii. :)

I'm guessing people didn't buy it because... well the game just didn't interest them. I don't have a Wii, but I probably wouldn't have bought it if I did, it just doesn't look appealing to me

the reason why no-one bought this game is because it was on the wii,and wii owners don't see that as a console for hardcore games. I know for a fact that a lot of people bought the wii JUST for wii fit.

As for the game itself, I have no wii (because I hate them) but if this game was on ps3 or in my case 360 i would not have hesitated from buying the game, the gameplay looked fun and fast, if repetetive, and whilst the music was 'meh' the announcers sounded hilarious.

And even though the gameplay may be repetetive i could still be fun, i mean killing a dude in fallout 3 with VATS is repetetive, but you know what its a blast everytime.

Lets also count the fact that a lot of wii owners are people with families, and whilst the overthetop violence looks hilarious to me, I doubt many wii owners will like the look of that game.

Lets just say that Madworld belongs to a real console
(i.e. PS360)

no intention to start a console war, I still respect the wii even if i don't like it

People who never bought MadWorld missed out on a great Wii title. Yes it got repetitive sometimes, but that is easy to overlook due to the constant enjoyment.
And for people who said it didn't interest them, I'm guesssing it would have interested you if it was on PS3 or 360???
I nearly never bought the game becasue I thought it looked to grown-up to be a Wii game, and that it wasn't have the same backing that kids games do on the Wii. but I still got it. It was easily the most fun I've had playing a singleplayer game on the Wii. The graphical style is well suited to the Wii, and along with the games muisc, it made for a really enjoyable play. I also thought the commentary was hilarious, that alone made the game a better game.

Just purchased Madworld this week, Gamestop has a deal where you can get it for $30 new so I finally caved and got it.

It's a fantastic game, and I'm loving what I've played so far.

I really want Madworld but don't have the money yet (saving for an anime convention this summer) but I did buy the $40 Excitebots and it's a lot of fun. It hurts me that I can't get Madworld yet.

I didn't buy it simple because from what I've played and seen of the game it's repetitive, short and really not my taste. I just have other things I'd rather spend my money on.

I think your sales expectations for this game are too high though. Sega and Platinum knew this wasn't a million seller. Which is why the game is low budget. It will likely turn a profit easily other time.

Brad, I think that within a community of "hardcore" gamers, if someone has a Wii it's not their only gaming console. So they're most likely not craving hardcore games to play that much and MadWorld suddenly has more competition.
That's why I still don't really believe that "hardcore" games that aren't first party can sell very good on the Wii. Because anyone who would be really really interested in a game like MadWorld is most likely not sitting on just a Wii but probably has a PS3/360/PC aswell and then that Wii game has to be insanely convincing to warrant that 50$ pricetag and compete with the other games available to that "hardcore" gamer.
It is unfortunate, I guess.

I passed up on it for a few reasons, the main ones probably being that I find the visual presentation kind of nauseating to behold. It is kind of hard to describe and I can respect the different artistic direction to the norm, but it dosn't really appeal to me.

Also from what I saw of the game in a number of trailers and from the footage I watched on the feed the game just isn't really to my taste.

I expect I would have passed on Madworld, regardless of the console it was on.

I don't really feel compelled to buy it merely in the hopes that it would fuel more "hardcore" games being present on the Wii. It is nice to support such things but I don't think everyone is obliged to buy a game regardless of personal taste simply because it is a "hardcore" game on a "casual" console.

I didn't purchase it because I can barely afford anything at the moment.

Truth be told, I only bought the game because it seemed to be the last great game for it since Mario Kart Wii. It got repetitive, but I guess the reason I managed to beat it was because it was so short.

I think this reinforces my response to your last post, that MadWorld is a very niche game and niche games just don't sell well. I don't know what you expected it to sell, but I hardly see it as doing very poorly for what it is.

trexman said...

for those who said that the black and white presentation was nauseating, what do you mean by that? maybe that might be the case on the levels where your riding your motorcyle, and everything blurs as you go past, but still i don't understand why a black and white color scheme makes you sick.

do you people feel the same way about the movie Sin City, or the scene from Kill Bill Vol 2 where the bride figths the crazy 88's?

GreyFoxVinzin said...

I loved the game, played it till I beat it, and went through it again to bitchslap the hard mode simply because. People don't want to spend $50 on a game that doesn't have online and that supposed "replay" value it gives. Not to mention a lot of the "hardcore" gamers seem to not consider the Wii a real console simply because of their "button mashing" being replaced by "Stick waggling".

People ask for new or creative things everyday in their games but it seems to me that when something like that does come out, they don't even try it out and then complain about the market having too many generic games on the store shelves. These kinds of people should only go to a mirror if they want to find someone to blame.

Even having only the Wii, I'm not in the financial position to be able to play whatever I want. I was very excited for MadWorld (still am, once I have the money for it), but right now, all I'm willing to shell out of my hard-earned money is the $50 for NMH2 when that comes out. Until then, I'm content playing what I have - that, and writing a fantasy novel. (Shameless plug is shameless.)

I have to say, even if I hadn't of sold my Wii, I probably still wouldn't have bought Mad World. Not because I'm not "hardcore", but because the game didn't look appealing to me. Honestly, in this day and age spending $50 on something you aren't that sure about, is ludicrous.

Jeffrey said...

I'm able to buy Madworld now. FINALLY! It's $29.99.

Jin said...

I didn't get it because the gameplay didn't look that good to me. I'm not going to be attracted to a game simply because it's one of the few games on the Wii that has blood in it.

What makes you think it's hardcore? Violence and gore aside, it seemed as simple and immature as any other Wii game. The adverts didn't help that image either.

I really want this game but I dont have a wii. I quite like the ideas of black, white and blood. Why its only on wii!!!!

i've been broke with bills lately... and Madworld just wasn't my cup of tea for a MUST BUY game atm. I'll pick it up eventually, probably within the next few days.

Amazon has a deal right now for $30

All people saying its too repetitive or that there's only mindless violence obviously didn't even bother looking up a review .

After all the game has an interesting and dark story ,the announcers are hilarious even if sometimes they tend to repeat themselves a little too much, jack is badass and there is enough variety in the levels( which are very detailed for a wii game ),challenges and bosses to keep you interested during the whole game.
And also, how can black and white be nauseating ? what you people can't watch an old movie without puking ?

But the game also had bad luck since it came only a week after RE5, and people may not be able to buy 2 brand new games in such a short period of time. but hey, now if its like 30 bucks, no more excuses.
