CryEngine3 on Consoles Makes Me Hard

GDC is an exciting time for game developers and gamers alike. Over the next few days, we wait as developers to gather and discuss their plans to use new technologies and methods to make the games of the future. We obviously expect some game announcements and other news relevant to the consumer. So far, a new Zelda has been announced and Ueda disappointed me again but something I have been waiting for has finally happened. Crytek has finally developed an iteration of their incredible cryengine that can be scaled to run on both the Xbox 360 and PS3. Allow me to introduce "Cryengine 3":

Graphics Whores Unite! The thought of this technology running on a home console and not on a PC is blowing my mind. Far Cry 2 looked phenomenal but Crytek is still the king of ultra realism in game graphics. So this begs the question, is Crysis being developed for consoles? What better way to introduce this engine to consoles than using it to bring one of the best looking shooters ever to the PS3 and 360? I am patiently awaiting an announcement.

In all honesty, it really should be called CryEngine 2.5. It just doesn't look like a large enough leap to warrant the number 3, especially considering all it looks like is a heavily optimized version of 2 for the consoles.

Regardless, it'll be nice to finally run Crysis on Very High with fewer slow downs and hopefully allow a wider audience to experience the awesomeness that is Crysis. Just hope they don't screw up the console port for you guys.

I don't think I'd even go so far as to call it CryEngine 2.5. I'm finding it hard to tell the difference between the two engines. That either say how much unimprovement has gone on or just shows how advance CryEngine 2 was in the first place.

However, I have to give major props to them in getting it to run on the 360 and PS3. The potential and the graphics do look amazing. Now we just need devs to start making the games on it.
