I don't post about the news too often. I've never thought of us as a news site. I don't see us to be the ones breaking the news getting it out there to you first before anyone else. Commentary on the other hand is something different. Our opinions I feel are unique and sometimes, worth listening to.
It was announced recently that there is going to be a LEGO ROCK BAND. Why? I have no clue. This is just another Rock Band. This will add long to the Beatles Experience that is already slated. I don't necessarily want to say that this has always been on of my fears, but back when Guitar Hero announced Aerosmith, I could see something like this happening. Just because you get a big named band on the label does not mean it is an improvement on the game. Instead of focusing on make the game better and finding new ways to keep it fresh, the focus is on who's name is on the cover, my opinion: Not the way to go.
I think the market is becoming over saturated. These tie ins and band promotions are just a sign that they're running out of ideas. The game sells and will make money, but both EA and Activision are notorious about pumping titles out yearly and eventually creating franchises that are shells of their former selves. Namely Need For Speed and Tony Hawk.
This was always one of the problems with a game being accepted by the masses. The majority is fickle, fleeting. They lose interest very quickly. They want to be with the trends and when it's done they move on to the next big thing. Music games have been a huge part of my gaming career. I started with Parappa and Bust-A-Groove in high school and have been loving it ever since. But I won't be sad when Rock Band and Guitar Hero die out. The best of the American Guitar series was the first one after all and the spirit was long gone after that one became popular. Plus there is always Guitar Freaks.
Anyone tired of this shit, yet?

Right...really not needed when normal Rock Band is perfect the way it is. Whatever makes the company money I guess.

Well its a throw up between you and machinima on YouTube.

Main reason I listen to the podcast and watch the show.

You can stop right there, I hate rock band and all other "band/ music" games. If you want to play in a band, buy a real guitar and learn.

Yes.
The gaming industry needs a good kick in the preverbal pants, an infusion of new gaming blood so to say.
I bet you (david) and all the other 4PP members could come up with better game ideas then what's out there right now.
Who agrees?
The only thing that makes me more hopeful for Rock Band is what they have done with Rock Band 2. Being able to carry over all your Rock Band songs to the seconded edition is a huge step above what Activision is doing with Guitar Hero. Rock Band has made great improvements to the genre with this move towards a single, large library. I just hope they don't get off this path with these special editions.
I can't wait for Lincoln Logs Guitar Hero.
Honestly, these special editions are really getting out of hand, and I do agree that this is just a sign that they're just running out of ideas. Its really sad to see such a great idea at first die out in such a way. With Guitar Hero: World tour out with the cymbals they added, its not that much different from rock band, just another option when choosing a music band game. These special editions in all honesty are kinda pathetic for Activision. And just to through it out, im wondering if they could do something with the eyetoy+rock band, unless they've already done it, and really make you feel like a rockstar in a way. I'm not sure how it will work, but that's just something that came to mind for me right now.
Its all about the almighty dollar. As long as people keep paying for this crap the more rock bands and guitar heros we will see. Companies, especially EA, could care less about innovation and new ideas as long as they can milk every franchise they have for max profit.
Sooner or later, Tony Hawk Rock Band might pop up in their minds...
i think its good for the younger crowd...i hope they make the songs exportable to rockband 2...ill export them and then sell it back :D
I know Lego Rock Band sounds like a gimmick, but imagine this. Sure its a standard game with new songs and lego rockers. But when you purchase the box set it comes with its own instruments made of legos. It comes with all 4 instruments (not assembled of course.) The ability to construct and customize the instruments sounds amazing.
