Seriously... Watch This!

Yeah, it's the same trailer linked to earlier. But now it's embeded so all you have to do is hit play. Everyone needs to see this.

When Squaresoft brings their fucking A game, they always impress. God I'm excited. Could this end up being the best RPG battle system ever??

Well personally I'm really not allowing myself to get all that excited at this point, purely because I know the game's not out for probably another 18 months over here and if I get excited I'll go crazy with the waiting.

I do like the general setting and world design, which seems like they're basically doing 'Midgar 2'. I always found Midgar the most compelling setting for a Final Fantasy game, since putting all the ususal FF craziness and histrionics in a recognisable 'hyper-modern' setting sort of offsets the melodrama and makes it all a lot more relatable. Having said that, I think I can see where this is going - the game will probably start in the city (I think they called it 'Cocoon'?) with a small raggedy band of upstarts fighting the faceless oppressors, there'll be a cathartic event of some sort a few hours in, and they'll be sent off around the world to find a way to stop the big bad. In other words, it sort of looks to me like FF7 all over again. Not that I'm complaining - I'm no FF7 apologist, and to this day I still think that game, taken on its own merits, is among hte best games ever made.

As far as the battle system goes, I'm still having trouble deciphering exactly how it works. From what I gather it's basically just a return to the old ATB system, but more dynamically represented in the onscreen animations, and possibly with the ability to chain together certain attacks? It also seems like you're able to make some kind of actions during the enemy's turn. I wonder if that works somewhat like the Mario RPG games, where you can hit a button at the right time to effectively 'counter' the enemy's attack during their turn. I definitely wouldn't go as far as to call it the 'best RPG battle system ever' at a time when we know so little about it.

From watching that video a couple of times, it looks like the battle system will be very cinematic. It seems that you can chain actions together a little like what White Night Chronicles has done. But of course that is just from looking at around a minute or less of battle footage. So I could be way off base.

Whatever it is this game looks fantastic.

There's a 1080p version of the trailer up on the UK PSN store. No idea if it'll be up on the US PSN store later tonight.

It's really hard not to jump the gun with FF. I have been disappointed in the past but this looks fantastic. I do hope the final product does not disappoint.
