Motion = Better?

From my experience with the Wii, I think there developed a thought process that Motion means a better game. I've seen it from customers trying to choose between a Wii version and a Xbox 360 version of a game. They look at the two only really seeing the box art. They maybe look at the price and then come up and ask me which version would be the better. I usually tell them that the 360 version will look a lot better, include online play, and possibly other improvements due to more powerful hardware. I shit you not, a majority of the time, they look at me and say "But doesn't the Wii have motion controls?"

It's like motion controls is a big deciding factor in their minds. Maybe it is a big factor. That's the hurdle that has kept so many people away from video games. Sure it's easy for "us" to understand controllers and the multiple buttons. Motion controls are a great supplement when done right. But there are two things with that statement. It's a supplement, it adds to the gameplay experience and is not the focus. Second, when done right. A majority of the time, it is not. Who knows if it ever will be.

Wii Motion-Plus is nowhere to be seen. It definitely won't make it out this holiday season. I guess Nintendo is spreading their titles out. We've seen them do this with their past consoles. They like to come up with a handful of great ideas and then time release them so they have the entire year covered. The only problem this time is that they have really mediocre ideas and none directed towards the "core."

My problem is that I have too much Hope. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt and let them turn it around. It's a character strength/flaw I've had since I can remember. Nintendo has been on my support list since the N64. I wouldn't say it is pure fanboyism, just a way I choose to look at the world. I'm not asking you to try to convince me or change my perspective. I'm a pretty stubborn guy and I'd rather look at things this way. It's just in these darker times, we have to huddle together, find other people who believe things will get better, and somehow turn those feelings into reality.

Always hopeful, always waiting,
David

I agree... I don't own a Wii myself but I have experienced Wii play and motion controls don't always add a major aspect to the game.
I think in the future if motion controls are perfected to a point they may add a whole new element of immersion but right now i honestly don't think that it's that much better that you can swing your arm and achieve the same result as pushing a single button, especially when instead of swinging your arm you can flick your wrist in motion controls and achieve the same function with the same strength as swinging your arm.

It's just a different input method and not nessecarily a better one, It's not like it makes you feel like you're actually in the game any more than you would with a standard Xbox 360 or PS3 controller in your hand.

Though I don't own a Wii, I've played it a few times and it honestly felt like game developers had to work AROUND the Wii-mote rather than work with it. Most of the times I played with friends, we end up fighting over the Game Cube controls.

I've always said that if Nintendo were truly serious about motion controls being a new revolution in gaming, they would have had Wii Motion Plus functionality included from day 1.

I like the Wiimote. Whenever the boys and I go for a Mario Kart of SSBB round they go for the GC controls but I stick with the Wiimote and end up on top most of the time.

I think more people would find these new devices more enjoyable if they played out the positives instead of putting forth the effort to find the negatives.

I've recall a lot of people saying that motion controls would be awesome back in the day, and the same people whine about the Wiimote now that it's here...
Give it time. N64, PSX, etc were the starting blocks for 3D and we're pretty much at the mastery point now with Wii, PS3 and 360.
They'll probably take motion control over to the Eighth Generation consoles and build from there. I can olny see it getting better, and if it doesn't... well dang.

Personally, the most fun I've had on the Wii are with games that hardly use the motion controls (for example, No More Heroes). I think that motion controls will be good once they get the responsiveness right. As it is right now, they're just not accurate enough for me, but I can appreciate what they're trying to do.

If they are going to make a motion controller, at least let us choose how we want to play it. Some people might not like playing with motion controllers, they might want a static controller that is comfortable. Motion controls can help immerse you into a game, but can it really add such a new unique aspect to a game. Imagine Gears of War with Motion controls, trying to figure out which way to hold it, where every button is, might be confusing for some. Why not just make a normal controller with which everybody is used to, rumble and maybe a six axis type of feature added can immerse someone without the need to make confusing and sometimes ridiculous gestures.

One day when technology permits we may be able to use motion controls effectively, maybe something like a hologram, where you, the person, is the controller. But with these "gimmicky" motion controllers, which are nothing but an improvement from the power glove, I hate to say it, but it sucks. This is coming from someone who owns a Wii, and who will be getting a PS3 this christmas.

What I'm trying to say is, why not give a choice to the player to play it the way he/she sees fit? Why are they trying to make a gamer get confused and disorientated with different controllers, if he/she owns all 3 consoles and with the PC. Make it more tailored to a varying amount of gamers, and I will be happy.

I definitely believe when done correctly the controls can benefit the game, especially for games like Metroid Prime and other shooters. However when devs use the wii-mote for the sake of using the wii-mote it can really kill the game.

So personally I believe motion is better, when done right.

A choice would be good. A lot of people prefer the console style of FPS, but some people such as I absolutely despise it to no end. Normally I'd stick to PC for my FPS, but with all the lame DRMs that are flooding the PC world these days eventually we'll have no choice but to jump over.
I think with time they'll pull something off that everyone can enjoy. It's not like they completely ignore the comments and suggestions of the people that buy their stuff.

Go to their sites: use contacts, post in forums and such. They have people checking all the time, and if you get a post that bumps along for a while they'll take it into stronger consideration.
