I had just recently finished playing Gears of War, and was wondering if GoW2(Gears of War 2) is worth purchasing since it is being released in November. It is a question that has been bugging me for a while now, and since I just finished the first one I wanted to post my opinions.
First I want to take time to say what I feel is good about the upcoming game. GoW2 seems to be sporting some upgrades into its hardware, as well as its new multi player modes. It will be showing off, what I like to call, a beefier Unreal Engine 3. With this being said the visuals should be off the charts and the detail that the programs have to work with should be amazing. So say bye to that piece of junk V6, because I am switching to the hemi. What has also caught my eye in the new GoW2 has to be the new 5 player “Horde” mode in which a group of locust is sent at you in waves from varying difficulties. I personally feel that by adding this new mode to the line up, it will give GoW2 a better chance at becoming a fan favorite for online play. This will diversify the online modes rather than sticking with the typical co-op campaign mode and 4 player death match. Also, the addition of newer enemies and terrains will definitely give players something new and interesting to look forward to as well.
Now, I know that the faults of one game do not make the sequel to that particular game bad, but it does not give me much to look forward to on GoW2. First off, let us talk about controls. The first games controls were at best average. The cover system was a great idea, but was not executed well in my opinion. I had a hard time trying to go forward while in cover. Instead, I found myself switching to a different cover position or side rolling to new cover. I honestly can tell you that this problem had gotten me killed more than a few times. Also, strafing side to side was very slow and turning was almost unbearable, which had also gotten me killed on more than one occasion. I, for one, do not think that the control scheme will change much if at all. If this is the case, I will be pretty disappointed. Secondly, there was absolutely no story. Ok, they had to destroy the Locust for some unknown reason and that you needed to deploy the resonator. Other than that there was no story at all. What I want to know, is who is this Marcus guy and why was he imprisoned. It would also be nice to know where the Locusts came from? When I played through the game, I was wondering when they were going to explain these small bits of story they randomly threw out there. This sucks, because they never did explain anything at all. How can you throw out pieces of information like that and not follow it up in a game? Though now that I think about it, how could they develop a story in what is a ridiculously short game. I just hope that GoW2 has a legitimate story line and well fleshed out characters to take the sour taste out of my mouth that was left by the original.
GoW2 has a lot of explaining to do and a lot of improvements to make if it intends to live up to the hype that it is getting. Most sequels keep a big chunk of what its predecessor had, and from my point of view, it would be an epic fail if they were to take that approach. This game needs an over haul on just about everything if it would even come close to what some are saying could be the next Halo. GoW2 could turn out to be the same roller coaster ride that we have all been on but with better graphics. This, my friend, would be shame.

To touch up on the no story factor of your post, I'll say that the game did indeed have no real story to grasp for. But it had a bunch of openings that could have caught your eye, such as the look Fenix gave the lady on the heli (your informer through out the game), and they also speak of Trains past and I think they bring up Dom's wife once (been a while since I played). The 2nd game they promised FAR more story as they've had more time to work on that aspect. Gears of War 1 was a rushed project (if you got the collectors edition you'll see that on the DVD). I have high hopes for the title, and I am also looking forward to Horde mode :)
I think its over hyped. I was pretty disappointed with the first one. The story was almost non existent and it was way too short. Also if the multiplayer is anything like the first one, we can expect all the 10 year olds to come out to play. I'm not getting Gears 2 on launch day :S.
I'm not a big fan of GOW multiplayer, actually i just tried to enjoy the game for it's campain. I'm looking at GOW2 because it seems to have a much richer campain.
It's pretty easy these days to throw around terms like Overhyped or Overrated. Seems that no matter how successful or impacting a game is there will always be those to bring it down as much as they can, and those ready to religiously defend it (Summed up in one word: fanboy). Only through a reasonable analysis and a proper thought out opinion can we truly distinguise what is what. And I'm glad you've done just that Juan.
Luckily for me, I've never really played the first Gears of War properly (My only chance was at a mates house for an hour). From what I played it was great, but I also knew that if this was stretched out for 9 or so hours it would get extrememly repetitive. Plus from many videos and websites I've seen, the plot looks redundant at best.
Thats why GeoW2 is a tempting buy for me now. Since I've never had to go through the first it won't be a case of feeling that I'm playing through the same game again with a few tweaks. It would seem like one amazing hit with practically no misses. If GeoW2 proves to be a better effort than it's predecessor, I might finally consider getting a 360.
This just goes to show how there's no real scale of how good or bad a game is, since we all have our own opinions and experiences. Half Life 2 is renound for being one of the most amazing video games in history, and there are still some people who don't like it for simple (But fair) reasons like not liking first person shooters. Thats why I think reviewers should stop basing games on a score system and simply tell us who the games are for and what makes them so good.
I'm probably going a bit off topic and just rambling now. lol
Reason Marcus was in jail is he abandoned his post to go save his father but when he got there he was to late, when he went back Hoffman gave him a BS trial and sent him off to jail, and to explain the locust, they lived under the planet before humans showed up, more to be explained in Gears 2
never really enjoyed GoW in the first place, i could never see a damned thing
I've never played the game, but from what I've seen you play during your broadcast only reminded me of Army of Two. I know AoT is not the best game too, but it seam to have some good point too. Anyway, only time will tell if it's gonna be a good game.
I think you have to be pretty damn bad with a controller to not be able to handle the cover system, its always worked fine for me, and now that GoW2 is out, I don't think it was over-hyped at all, more then worth the wait, I am however glad that they're going into the story more this time. Long live Gears! lol
